Bill Joy, vi and 1200 baud

Register is running a great story about how Bill Joy created vi.
Apparently, vi commands are cryptic because they were optimized for Bill’s 1200 baud connection.
For additional entertainment, you can read Reddit’s discussion of the article here - complete with (always entertaining) emacs/vi mud-slinging.

Nice link.
I am glad to see that it takes even gurus like Joy to write something like vi some months.
Today this is not acceptable anymore. Today you have to use X on/over/upon/ Y to hack it in 5 lines (which takes you an afternoon) - after you have studied the non-existing documentation (source-code) (6 months) and then try to find a hardware environment where it fits to promote it as the only thing (rest of you life).
